The Spark
Ditched Spotify. Looking for a good offline music player for my Android phone. Current apps suck — ugly UI/UX, load too many ads, and have too many confusing options. I want something simple, lightweight, and clean that just plays my local music files without any bullshit.
Details
- Must be 100% offline — no internet permission needed
- Clean, modern UI (Material You / Material 3)
- Lightweight — should feel instant even on older phones
- No ads, no tracking, no analytics
- Simple by default: open app → see music → tap play
- Core features only: play, pause, skip, queue, folders, albums, artists, basic EQ, sleep timer
- Should support common formats: MP3, FLAC, AAC, M4A, OGG, WAV
- Optional: tag editor, lyrics, widgets
Why It Excites Me
- I personally need this — scratching my own itch
- There IS a gap: Musicolet is the closest but UI isn't visually appealing; Poweramp is overwhelming; most others have ads
- Building an Android app is a skill I want to level up
- Could be open-source and build a community
Potential Obstacles
- Musicolet already exists and is free + no ads — why would people switch?
- Music player market is mature and saturated
- Hard to monetize without ads or subscriptions (user expectation is "free")
- Google Play Store is crowded with music players
- Maintenance burden: Android version fragmentation, media API changes
Next Steps
- Research existing competitors deeply (Musicolet, Poweramp, BlackPlayer, Pulsar, Oto)
- Validate demand — check Reddit, Play Store reviews for complaints
- Decide tech stack (Kotlin + Jetpack Compose? Flutter? React Native?)
- Design a simple MVP feature set
- Sketch UI wireframes
